What makes OBMS different?

Honoring Nature

From the time children join our program, we support them in becoming environmental stewards. We help our children to love and respect nature by providing ample time outside each day. We also recognize the value of play in the natural world for the development of the child's well-being. Our Nido and Primary programs spend more than 1.5 hours each day in our outdoor environments, and our Forest School program is outside everyday at our local state parks or farms. In Elementary, our lessons invite the children to study the physical and living world outside of the classroom. They care for our gardens with the support of the younger children and even plan outings to clean our local community and the greater Hampton Roads area.

Authentic Montessori

Our Montessori classrooms, Nido, Primary, and Elementary, all have AMI (Association of Montessori International) trained guides. These trainings are a rigorous study of child development, Montessori theory, and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Because this organization was originally created by Dr. Montessori herself, our methods and instruction remain true to the core ideals of her pedagogy.

Our Mission

Children deserve only the best the world has to offer: the warmest love, the healthiest food, the most beautiful music, the most prepared adults to help them — and then, when the time is right, for those adults to step back and let the children learn on their own. They deserve teachers who joyfully come to work each day because they are motivated, committed, and most importantly, supported by administration, parents, and a community of people who believe in a common mission. Working in such an environment is how the child reaches their fullest human potential. That’s the goal of Organic Beginnings Montessori School.

Inclusivity and Diversity

At OBMS, we are committed to fostering a loving and inclusive community for our children. We celebrate and honor the diversity of our families, staff, and young learners, including differences in race, ethnicity, culture, language, gender, family structure, abilities, and socioeconomic status.

Our approach focuses on modeling self-love and inclusion. We strive to create an environment where every child feels valued and supported. By including and respecting every family and their unique culture, we enrich the experiences of our entire community.

We use inclusive practices to support our children and promote a sense of belonging. Our goal is to help each child develop a positive self-identity and an appreciation for the diversity around them. We continuously reflect on and improve our practices to ensure they align with our values of accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

As part of our community, we ask that families respect and honor all members and support their child(ren) in doing the same.

Our Story

Organic Beginnings opened its doors in 2018 to provide authentic Montessori education to a small group of Primary aged children at the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Now, five years later, we've just opened our third location in the ViBe Creative District for children ages 16 months through 12 years old.

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”

-Maria Montessori
